Taft College Names Steven Gee Head Baseball Coach
Taft College has named Steven Gee the new head coach of the Cougars men's baseball program. Gee, a lifelong Taft resident, educator and coach, moves into the position after serving as Taft College's head assistant baseball coach since 2020. He will lead the program while continuing his commitment to the academic, athletic and personal development of its student-athletes.
Gee graduated from Taft Union High School in 2013 after competing as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Selected in the Major League Baseball Draft following his senior season, Gee chose instead to continue his education and baseball career at California State University, Bakersfield. He joined the Roadrunners baseball program as a pitcher and earned a midweek starting role as a freshman in 2014, finishing with the second-lowest ERA on the pitching staff.
Gee moved into the Saturday starting role as a sophomore and recorded a 2.55 ERA during the most successful season in program history. The Roadrunners won the Western Athletic Conference championship and made their first NCAA Regional Tournament appearance at UCLA. Gee entered his junior season as the Friday night starter before a season-ending injury required Tommy John surgery. After an extensive rehabilitation, he returned for his senior season, filled several roles and became a mentor to younger pitchers. He graduated from Cal State Bakersfield in 2018 with a liberal arts degree and a minor in history.
Retired former TC Head Baseball Coach Vince Maiocco praised Gee in his new position, "When Steven Gee joined our coaching staff in 2019, it became quickly apparent that he would become the future head coach at TC. Steven has poured his heart and soul into Cougar Baseball. He grew up in the community of Taft and he is without any doubt the right person for this job. I truly believe he will take the Cougars to new heights."
Gee returned home in 2020 to join the Taft College staff and also teaches weight training courses at the college. His experience with West Side Recreation and Park District, where he worked as a recreation specialist supporting youth programs, further shaped his approach to coaching and community service. Gee credits District Administrator Les Clark III, mentors Vince Maiocco, Bill Kernen and Bobby Maitia, and parents Steve and Stacy Gee for their leadership, sacrifice and support throughout his development. Gee emphasizes that none of his accomplishments would have been possible without the foundation, love and support his parents provided.
He is married to Jordin Gee, a former NCAA Division I soccer player at Cal State Bakersfield. The couple married in 2023. As head coach, Gee will draw on his experience as a drafted high school player, Division I pitcher, educator and assistant coach to guide the Cougars. His approach is grounded in a principle that has followed him throughout his career: "How you do anything is how you do everything." For Gee, that standard reflects the effort, discipline and attention he expects to bring to every part of the program.
