TAFT, CA – Despite heavy rainy conditions in Los Angeles City, the Lady Cougars Basketball Team of Taft College did not let the weather cloud their ways to success.
The Cougars defeated two teams on the road starting with the Eagles of Los Angeles Mission College on Friday, November 14. LA Mission provided a strong effort trying to outperform the Cougars only down 26-33 at halftime. However, the Black and Gold deemed it too strong for the Eagles and outscored Mission every quarter winning the game 80-63.
Sophomore Ella Waufle led the game with 22 points, shooting a high percentage from the 3-point line (3-4) and the foul line (11-13) with only 1 turnover in 29 minutes. Sophomore teammate Madyn Kassatly scored 16 points, making one three pointer, making five of six free throws, and shooting overall 5-8. Freshman Laila Gines contributed 11 points off the bench.
The next day, Los Angeles Southwest College gave it a crack and tried to upset a Central Valley Conference contender as they did last week against Reedley College. That was not the case when the tipoff started. Taft outscored the other Cougars in the first half with Taft pouring the heat on in the second quarter 29-4. The Black and Gold defensive attack was obvious with Taft scoring 28 points off turnovers. The TC bench outscored Southwest 39-12. Taft won the game 72-38.
Freshman sensation Aubrey Aldan came off the bench to score 5 of 8 three-point field goals resulting in a game high of 17 points. Freshman Kimiko Kennedy pumped in 15 points shooting a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Taft outrebounded Southwest 44-30.
Taft remains undefeated at 6-0. They will play their first home opener this Wednesday, November 19 at 6:00 pm against San Bernardino Valley College.
