Cougars Battle to Wire in Road Loss at Reedley
Taft College went toe-to-toe with Reedley on the road Wednesday night but could not overcome the Tigers' advantage at the free-throw line, falling 80-74 in a tightly contested conference matchup at Reedley College.
The Cougars led after each of the first two quarters and were within a single possession entering the fourth, but Reedley's ability to get to the stripe and convert proved decisive down the stretch. Reedley finished 26-for-37 at the free-throw line, while Taft managed just 8-for-19, a 18-point gap that ultimately offset a strong all-around effort from the Cougars.
Taft opened well, using energy on the glass and balanced scoring to grab a 22-21 lead after the first quarter and carry a 40-39 edge into halftime. The Cougars continued to attack the boards, piling up 26 offensive rebounds and 59 total rebounds on the night, which helped them generate 83 field-goal attempts. Reedley answered in the third quarter, outscoring Taft 21-18 to go in front 60-58 heading to the fourth.
The final quarter remained close, but each Cougar push was met by Reedley trips to the line. Taft held Reedley to 37.7 percent shooting from the field and just 2-for-17 from 3-point range, but the Tigers' 20-16 scoring edge in the fourth quarter — fueled largely by free throws — was enough to keep the Cougars at arm's length in the closing minutes.
Madyn Kassatly led Taft's backcourt with an all-around performance, totaling 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while logging 40 minutes. In the paint, Alesha Gordon anchored the interior with 15 points on an efficient 7-for-10 shooting night and a game-high 16 rebounds, giving the Cougars a potent inside-out combination. Taft finished 30-for-83 from the field and 6-for-30 from beyond the arc, creating plenty of opportunities with its work on the boards.
Defensively, the Cougars forced 15 Reedley turnovers and came up with nine steals, competing possession by possession despite foul trouble that contributed to 26 team fouls. Taft's activity helped limit Reedley's rhythm from the perimeter and kept the Cougars within striking distance throughout the second half.
The loss drops Taft to 74-80 on the scoreboard but offers several positives, highlighted by the Cougars' rebounding dominance and standout efforts from Kassatly and Gordon. Taft will look to build on those strengths and clean up the free-throw differential as the Cougars continue through the heart of their conference schedule.
Taft is now 2-3 in conference play temporarily in 4th place. They will now begin on a 3 game consecutive home schedule starting this Wednesday, January 28 against Lemoore College at 6:00 pm.
