Bio

Romeo Lagmay Jr. will be entering his 4th year as Women’s Basketball Head Coach for Taft College. He has accumulated over 29 years of experience coaching middle school, high school, NCAA Division II, NBA Summer Pro League, NAIA, and NJCAA.

As an award-winning Head Basketball Coach and two-time Board Member-elect of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Romeo Lagmay Jr., known as Coach Romeo, is renowned nationwide as a motivational leader who energetically drives transformation. Lagmay has also been voted the prestige of being selected the honors of a premier coach in the NCAA Basketball Academy in Tennessee and South Carolina. He has been a regular presenter and speaker at numerous national events, such as the WBCA engaging in professional development discussing topics in roundtables, forums and on-court presentations. Coach Romeo has nationally conducted motivational speaking at camps and banquets, and coaching with various basketball organizational camps.

Among many other accolades, he holds the distinction of being the all-time winningest coach at Dawson Community College in Montana and recently led the team to the 2022 Preseason Conference Tournament Championship and WBCA’s #1 Team GPA in the nation. He led Talladega College (Alabama) to a NAIA top 10 national ranking and was the only school to have defeated two NCAA Division I programs in the same season and a USCAA National Championship.

Lagmay’s previous coaching stops have included NCAA Division II Salem University and West Virginia Tech in West Virginia. Since 2001, Lagmay has held the record of the winningest coach at Salem University and he achieved one of the best turnaround records in the country at Salem. 

At the NJCAA level, Coach Lagmay has turned Dawson Community College into a regional powerhouse with 6 winning seasons leading the Buccaneers conference runner-up champions, 3 conference semifinals and 2 quarterfinals appearances.  Coach Romeo has developed academically 45 Presidents Honors List, 71 Academic All-Conference players along with 43 NJCAA Academic All-Americans.  He has also mentored 1 Conference and NJCAA Region MVP, 2 All-Americans, 4 NJCAA Top 40 Juco All-Stars, 7 NJCAA All-Region and 12 All-Conference players.  Lagmay finished his career at Dawson Community College with 140 wins. 

His expertise and dedication to the sport have allowed him to consistently develop under-estimated players and programs into nationally-recognized powerhouses at all levels of collegiate competition.  Lagmay is currently at 328 career wins as a 20 year head college basketball coach with only 5 losing seasons early in his career.  Coach Romeo reached his 300th Career Win on December 7, 2024.

Coach Romeo's impressive coaching resume speaks volumes about his ability to transform programs and develop players. With a focus on both academic and athletic success, he aims to instill a culture of excellence within the Taft College Women's Basketball program. His deep knowledge and experience in coaching will undoubtedly empower the team to achieve remarkable success both on and off the court.

Romeo is married to Tami Lagmay, loving on their 4-year old daughter, Julianna. Tami is the head girl's softball coach at Independence High School in Bakersfield. She also is a very successful collegiate softball coach with honors of being a two-time Coach of the Year along with several conference and regional championships. Tami spends time assisting with the Taft College Softball team.
