Opening Snapshot

Coach Lyle Martin Jr., now in his third year as Head Coach of Taft College Women’s Soccer, has built the program on discipline, development, and a championship culture. Known for his high energy leadership and ability to prepare athletes for the next level, Martin has elevated Taft into a respected force in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

Coaching Experience
Since March 2023, Martin has led the Cougars to year over year growth, including a playoff run in 2024. Under his leadership, multiple players have transferred to four-year universities. He’s established a culture of accountability, hard work, and professionalism both on and off the field.

Before Taft, Martin coached at Stockdale High School, leading the program to a three-peat league championship run. He built disciplined teams, developed players who went on to compete at the college level, and implemented training systems that raised the standard year after year.

Playing Career
Martin’s professional career spanned across the globe with Chivas USA, Vancouver Whitecaps, clubs in three cities in China, Bangkok (Thailand), and San Antonio, Texas. He became the first American to play professionally in China and competed against and with international stars, including David Beckham and Sun Jihai. His international playing experience now fuels the elite standard he brings to his coaching.

Education & Leadership
Martin studied Kinesiology at CSU Bakersfield and later ran a fitness business with his wife, Katie, for 10 years, offering bootcamps, cycling, hot yoga, and indoor soccer. Together, they also launched a character development soccer program that served schools, churches, and underserved communities for a decade.

Coach Martin is passionate about equipping young athletes with confidence, discipline, and resilience both on the field and in life. His faith driven leadership shapes players to grow as teammates, leaders, and individuals.

Personal & Community
Off the field, Martin is a proud husband and father of two, Lyla (12) and Kayden (10). He also serves as Director of Guest Services at Atmosphere Church, where he continues his mission of building leaders and making a lasting impact in the community.
